Both our 9AM and 1:30 PM trips encountered the largest creature on the planet today, the blue whale! We have been lucky enough to see them 3 days in a row. The blue whale is known to frequent our waters in late summer and fall. Our first trip encountered 2 blue whales and the second spotted 4! Not only did our guests get to witness the largest whale ever swim next to our boat, the 2nd largest whale made an appearance also, the fin whale.
I love sharing blue and fin whale encounters to our passengers, not many get to witness these amazing and huge animals. Blue whales in our area can reach close to 90ft. and fin whales close to 80ft. The blue whale population worldwide is possibly as low as 10,000 animals, so seeing multiple blue whales per trip is quite a treat. Many people don’t realize that California is actually a blue whale hot spot! it is estimated that 2,000 blue whales could gather off the California coast during peak season.
Thanks to Captain Danny and Deckhand Kevin for working hard to get our guest great looks at animals today! Oh! here are a few cute photos of a Southern sea otter mom and pup that we passed on our way out to sea! Hope to see you all out here! Naturalist Eric Austin Yee 10-6-2019
