an animal swimming in the water

Interesting interactions today! We came upon Killer Whales just after they had killed a Gray Whale calf this morning. This is the fourth calf taken this season in Monterey Bay by the California Bigg’s Killer Whale population. There were some familiar Killer Whales involved in the hunt today – Emma’s group, the CA 140’s were a part of today’s action along with several other Killer Whales. This Gray Whale mom was very distraught after losing her calf – charging boats and attempting to retaliate against the Killer Whales. Conditions were nice and calm with a little fog during part of the day. In total we saw 1 Humpback Whale, 1 Gray Whale, 10 Killer Whales, 150 Pacific Whitesided Dolphins & 4 Black-footed Albatross. You can view the drone footage from today’s trip here.
