The month of May brought us here at Discovery not one, but TWO amazing sightings in one week of an incredibly rare whale-the Baird’s Beaked Whale!
Not much is actually known about the world’s Beaked Whales due to their elusiveness.
The Baird’s whales we sighted are the largest of the Beaked Whale species, travel in small pods or groups, and we are lucky enough to sight them only a handful of times each year, IF we are lucky!
These whales can reach lengths of about 35 ft and weigh 26,000lbs.
This species is able to dive incredible depths up to 4,000 feet and hold their breath for an hour which makes them incredibly difficult to sight.
