As most humpback whales migrate out of area, we anticipate the arrival of these magnificent creatures. Gray whales migrate in great numbers past our area to head to their warm breeding grounds in the middle of the Baja California Peninsula. Around mid-February we will already see a few grays heading back up to their Northern feeding grounds. Many once thought all gray whales feed in the Bering and Chukchi Sea area but many whales have discovered alternatives. 200-250 gray whales have been using an area from Northern California to Central British Columbia as their feeding grounds. These gray whales that have saved themselves many miles of swimming are designated as the Pacific Coast Feeding Group.
